the bad news is going to be around for a while yet, the US market is toast if anybody thinks there is going to be a strong recovery take a look at Cisco still trading on a multiple of 81 with the E in PE still falling, logicallly there is only one direction for this stock unless a major earnings upswing appears and that is unlikely in the short term. bad debts must be accumulating from the dot com fallout and with " blue chip " companies such as AT&T reporting record losses there will be no capex spending increases while companies struggle for survival. When there was a energy shortage during the last US spring / summer alternative energy stocks went through the roof and were pushed to crazy values for a short time, gold in the short term will probably do the same, even more so if the middle east explodes or there is another terrorist attack. Would be very surprised if gold does not move higher in the short term, the market is not driven by fundamentals but greed and fear otherwise the NASDAQ would not have got to 5000 and companies such as Juniper Networks would not have traded on a multiple of over 2000.
