The first chart is a 35 year history of the NZSE40 Capital Index. (Data by courtesy of Adam Rands, Iguana2) It is not as bad as it looks. A better indication of performance is to use the Gross index, which includes dividends, etc. I have plotted both indices on the same chart over the last 8 years. The apparent net loss on the Capital Index is in fact a net gain when measured using the Gross Index. I was able to refrain from adding some trendlines - it was a struggle though.
