A very good free web based charting facility can be found at
<http://www.equis.com/java/>

Bar or line graphs are selectable, as well as Japanese Candlesticks. Data for
one year is charted, and plots are able to be zoomed or scrolled. Periodicity
can be daily, weekly, or monthly, even Intraday for US stocks. You are able to
draw trendlines and support/resistance levels on screen. Charts are printable.
Countries other than USA are supported. There is an online Users Manual which
gives full instructions plus notes on each indicator. This site provides an
excellent introduction to some of the tools of Technical Analysis, without any
financial outlay.

Indicators available are :-

Accumulation/Distribution
Bollinger Bands
Commodity Channel Index
Chaikin Oscillator
Compare Relative Strength
Envelope
MACD
Median Price
Momentum
Moving Averages
Moving Average Crossover
On Balance Volume
Price Oscillator
Price Rate Of Change
Price/Volume Trend
Relative Strength Index
Stochastics
Support and Resistance lines
Trendlines
Volume
Volume Oscillator
Williams %R

Loading. When you click on the link, and the Java applet has loaded (about 10
- 20 seconds), it comes up automatically with a bar chart of the Dow Jones
Index (.DJI). If you do not see this, there may be a problem with your browser.
Some versions of Netscape Navigator do not work at all, and older versions of
Internet Explorer may not give full functionality e.g. the "Search" function
may not work.

Charting stocks. When you enter a new stock code in place of DJI (top left
corner) hitting "Enter" or clicking on the "Refresh" button will plot the new
stock. Enter USA stocks as XXX New Zealand stocks as XXX.NZ and Australian
stocks as XXX.AX Select the plot type (line, bar or candlestick) and whatever
indicator you want (if any). The default indicator period that appears can be
altered if desired. The relative sizes of the Indicator and Volume inner panes
can be altered by clicking on the splitter bars and dragging them to the
desired position.

Printing. Click on the "Print" button in the screen toolbar. If you want a
bigger chart, click on "Larger chart" near the bottom of the screen. You will
need to use Landscape orientation of the paper, not Portrait. Click File, then
click Print, then click Properties, set up paper size and orientation, quality,
colours, etc and click OK, click OK again, and it will print. The actual chart
will be about 250mm x 100mm. You can change back to the original chart size by
clicking on "Smaller chart" near the bottom of the screen.

Click on "Help" to access the users manual.

These notes were written for incorporation into the Sharechat Education
"Learning to Invest" series, under "Technical Analysis", Part 6, Online
Charting.
