[sharechat] What is..."selling short" & "long"

I'm hearing and reading about it, and that traders are making profits from 'selling short' but I don't have a great description of what it is or how it works, where do you buy 'it' from in the first place, and how do you know when to do what?

Ditto 'long'.

Any clues anyone?
