Your chums had no right at all to make you publish a statement in order to 
clarify your comments: quote ["Normally that's a good reason to stay clear 
but in this case they just might be right."]

Exactly what you were inferring is unclear and in no way defamatory (for so 
many reasons I won't take up my time and readers time to list them)

Contacting you about this via email is one thing, requiring that you publish 
a statement regarding it another.

This is shameful behaviour and an awfully cheap marketing exercise.
