If one studies New Zealand history, the overwhelming theme which surfaces is surely that of conservatism. The "business generation tried to push the barriers back  - but like a stretched rubber band when the tension is released, the Enzed psyche has largely resumed its former shape.

It was significant to me this government's major policy moves ( including in today's budget) have been in instruments of social control such as more tax inspectors & more police, more inquiries, more punishment, more centralisation of power.

The growth in the bureaucracy & the legal profession & the change in its attitude to citizens can seem almost overwhelming compared to what is was only a few years ago.

If history is any teacher, I think warriors & intellectuals (important as they are) will dominate our society for a good 40 years before business has another good chance, although there will always be good opportunities for those looking hard for them.

Given the returns at home are likely to be lower on average during that period (because efficiency will take a back seat to effectiveness & meaning) , prudent investors may need to become better educated on values & also diversify abroad.
