packing it in until that point in time when 'al gore & crew' packs
it in and the blurbs being spooled to my desktop stop saying things
like :
'Al Gore's decision to contest the election to the bitter end
spurs panic sell-off'
and if that wasn't enough :
'Gore campaign officials said they would fight the election results
in the key U.S. state of Florida if Republican George W. Bush came
out on top'
and then this, the be all and end all :
'The Dow tumbled following Democratic presidential candidate
Al Gore's campaign manager William Daley's announcement that
the legal system should run its course in the Palm Beach county
of Florida where more than 19,000 votes were disqualified.'
'Daily told CNN that he and Christopher were meeting with lawyers
"to look at what options there are (and) come up with some
decisions as to how to proceed."'
'Gore campaign announced it would back efforts by Florida residents
disputing ballots in some areas.'
ah well! just when i thought it was lights out in 'spin city' and
i could wave good-bye to perpetual mis-information campaigns. but
i guess that will have to wait - these guys just can't shut up.
the count isn't even done yet, so could you please shut up until
that finishes?
here are the facts :
1) a similar number of ballots were invalidated in Palm Beach
county for the same reason in 1996.
2) a democratic election supervisor approved that ballot
3) it is the same ballot used in prior elections
so can you dig it? a process to handle ballot selection 'exists',
people are empowered to carry out this process, and this process was
followed to the letter of the law as it has been in prior elections.
end of story.
of course, gore and crew do have it in their power to 'contest
the election to the bitter end'. which is another way of saying
'would do anything to win election' which when polled 70
percent of those who voted for him responded in the affirmative.
not only is that 'reap what you sow' but time for a long hard look
in the mirror. having trouble sleeping? too bad - get some pills.
someone let this beast out his cage and it sure wasn't me ...
and if gore does win? fine! the country gets what the country
deserves.
bringing on lawsuits because the 'ballot was confusing' isn't only
specious but raises balance of power issues as this would constitute
an attempt to give the judicial branch effective control over the
executive branch.
think about it. how long for the lawyers to wrangle through that
one?
if you can get by that one, what about jurisdiction - state court,
federal court, supreme court?
of course, no one knows the answers to any of this. but i do know
that this would be one hell of a constitutional quagmire and the
potential high for a break-down in the operation of government.
a SERIOUS crises indeed.
it ends when gore concede. that puts the lid on bill daily's
rabid foaming. however, given the manner and methods now being
employed by daily and crew, i have no illusions as to if and/or
when that takes place. and even the AP is using terms like
'bitter end'.
until it does end, directional exposure to 'stocks' overnight is
a ludicrous proposition. may have to pull my 'for wooly times only'
hat down off the shelf - have fun during the day folks, but sleep
at night ...
looking forward it looks grim as the circus antics going on in
florida over control of the executive branch are sure to give
'new meaning' to the word 'partisanship' and guarantee that even
less gets done in washington. while this may be perceived as
'good for the market', it isn't good for those who rely on it's
services and/or handouts. as congress is split down the middle
to the extent of the florida vote, this just may be a glimpse
of 'how things go' ...
