[sharechat] Student Loans
Where is the gratitude to the taxpaying NZ public for
the subsidised education? Joe Public slaves away in
pathetic low-paying jobs to subsidise your studies.
The problem with the student loans scheme and paying
fees is that it should have been fazed in over say 18
years (the time it takes for a person to reach
university age). This would have allowed people to
save for their childrens' education. Instead, thanks
to the tri-system it came in fairly quickly.
One of the dangers is that people are studying largely
vocational degrees which, being merely training and
not education is leading to sheep-like product almost
oblivious to the world around them.
Do you ever see students nowdays protesting anything
other than fees? Not likely. Got to get good grades to
get the job. What a bore.
My first year at varsity we were out battling the
police in the streets during the Springbok tour.
Helmets on, blood gushing. Exciting stuff. Now you go
to varsity and they have cellphones, briefcases and
sit in cafes sucking lattes. If you asked these
students to take a moral stand they would think it was
a sharemarket buying operation of a company with a
five letter NZSE code M-O-R-A-L.
Still its not entirely their fault. It's all about
money now.
