[sharechat] It's your money - big picture
New programme last night on TV2 7.30PM. 2 brokers, one from DFMainland and
one from ASB Securities have each $3000 to buy some 6 (i think) different
shares with one having to be traded at least once a week. As this programme
is in prime viewing time it may get people interested in the share market a
bit more as it will offer a bit of education. If one mini-portfolio at least
makes over 10% (conservative I hope) in the 13 weeks then I am sure viewers
will want this for themselves and will have a dabble. We have a different
generation of people who really do not get much finance education from
schools.
The figures from those STATS of 1 in 4 invested in the sharemarket do not
say how much of those are managed funds. Alot of people are in the market by
default through these funds.
Also agree about the media portraying the bad. The big fall on the NASDAQ at
Easter was front page news and lead story. When it recovered and had one of
its biggest one-day rises did we see much coverage then. You bet we didn't -
tucked away in the normal place.
I agree with Warner that ones risk portfolio (by age mostly) will dictate
what shares one will invest in. Elderly people (retired) will not invest in
growth companies but will invest in Companies paying Dividends as income for
them. Thats why NZ market is good for them due to high dividends payed.
Different horses for courses.
Matt
