Hard to say whether the US market grew because of reinvested profits or for
any of a number of other reasons. It's really the old
cause - effect argument isn't it. It's really hard to prove that one set of
circumstances / events leads to / causes another set of circumstances /
events.
I' not really using Brierley's as a benchmark, merely giving them as an
example of a company who didn't pay out a lot in dividends, reinvested
heavily and, in my opinion anyway, badly lost their direction as they
increased in size.

Yes that's right, however it depends on which companies you invested in in
NZ, why you invested in them ie. your investment criteria, and also how much
of your investment was offshore.
Secondly, I'll answer your question with another, if the US had a similar
preoccupation with high dividend payouts would it have still experienced the
same sort of growth it has seen over the last two decades, at least. Why use
BIL as your benchmark?
