Yes that's right, however it depends on which companies you invested in in NZ, why you invested in them ie. your investment criteria, and also how much of your investment was offshore.

Secondly, I'll answer your question with another, if the US had a similar preoccupation with high dividend payouts would it have still experienced the same sort of growth it has seen over the last two decades, at least. Why use BIL as your benchmark?
