A policeman is no more than an agent of the
state. Why should he be anonymous if he kills someone, (even accidentally)
but have to identify himself at other times. If a policeman is killed or
injured in the line of duty, the media are quick to identify the unfortunate
officer & their family.
Iron Curtain countries were famous for keeping
their populaces in line with an anonymous bureaucracy. I see this incident as
representing as potentially leading to exactly this happening in New
Zealand. Public servants must be as accountable as anyone else regardless of the
tragic circumstances. It is still possible for the media to respect
personal privacy.
I support the NBR's action & even if I
didn't, I wouldn't risk reducing my investment returns by switching to another,
arguably inferior business newspaper.
