Savignon Blanc harvest down

March 10, 2000

By Felicity Anderson

The harvest of New Zealand's internationally recognised Sauvignon Blanc is
expected to be down in volume this year, especially in the Marlborough
region after heavy rainfalls.

But wine industry sources say the quality of what is harvested will be high,
especially after recent periods of high sunshine hours.

In a move to help meet growing international demand for New Zealand's
premium wines, Babich Wines has joined Shingle Peak, Nautilus Estate and
Wairau River as an equal partner in New Zealand's largest contract winery,
Rapaura Vintners.

Australian winery Robert Smith's Yulumba has shareholding in Nautilus.

Babich managing director Joe Babich says the move consolidates the winery's
position in Marlborough where it has purchased several vineyards to meet
local and export demand.

Its 25% share in Rapaura was purchased from founding investor Foxes Island.
