"We expect we would be in touch with the Singaporean government early in the new year, probably in January," a senior transport official told the Australian Financial Review.
Such talks are believed to be of interest to Australia's competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, which is weighing up Qantas' proposal to take a near quarter stake in Air New Zealand.
Both the Australian government and the commission have indicated that increased access to the Australian market for foreign carriers could help offset competition concerns about the Qantas-Air NZ alliance, the newspaper said.
Qantas has spoken out against an open skies deal with Singapore, saying it would have limited opportunity to take advantage of such a deal because of constraints on its capacity to third destinations.
