The company says it has received 14 days notice of strike action from its combined unions, the Rail and Maritime Transport Union, Waterfront Workers Union, and Foreman Stevedores Union.
The strike is due to start first thing on Saturday December 15 and finish at the end of the following day. The dispute is over staffing levels on new tugs which are planned for the port and are currently under construction.
"Should the strike eventuate it will effectively close the port for 24 hours and may result in further ongoing strike action," the company says.
However a union spokesman says it's hoped that the strike won't go ahead, with both parties currently in "meaningful discussions" to try to resolve the staffing issues.
Lyttelton Port Company has an annual turnover of around $58 million and its majority shareholder is the Christchurch City Council.
