"Lyttelton Port Co has been advised by the regional committee representing P&O Nedlloyd and its alliance partners that they have made a recommendation to their European principals that Lyttelton is not to be included in the new weekly European Direct 4100 service," the port company said in a statement.
Shares in Lyttelton, which had been suspended pending the announcement, eased five cents to $1.50 by mid-afternoon.
The decision is still to be ratified and confirmed by the European principals of P&O Nedlloyd, Lyttelton said.
The port company will not be making further comment until it is formally notified of the final decision.
Nedlloyd had been expected today to announce its choice of ports for the weekly "supership" container line -- the largest capacity service to call on New Zealand yet -- but the announcement has been delayed until midweek.
Only three out of the six port companies, which have been desperately trying to dredge up a reason why the shipping company should call on them, are expected to get the nod.
Nedlloyd is restructuring its lines, bringing in a fleet of 10 Albatross-class container ships to provide a large-scale, streamlined "eastabout" service.
