Air New Zealand has been voted by readers of Conde Nast Traveller magazine fifth best long-haul airline ahead of much larger international airlines including potential buyer, Qantas.

Air New Zealand was voted behind Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airlines and Emirates Air. Over 35,000 readers of the upmarket magazine voted.

Air NZ's European manager Gerard Gilmore said the placing for Air NZ with only one daily flight from the competitive British market, was a great accolade.

New Zealand was rated seventh in the best country list and 35th overall, while Huka Lodge in Taupo was rated best hotel in Australasia and the South Pacific, and fourth in the top 100.

Qantas is in talks to become a cornerstone shareholder in Air New Zealand, which is 82 percent government owned.
