The Land Transport Safety Authority Vehicle says registrations for the 2001 calendar year were up nearly 6% from the year before at 260,379, however that figure was not as high as the 264,578 registrations recorded in 1999.
Holden topped the market share for new car registrations last year with 17.3% or 10,092, followed closely by Ford with 16.9% of the new car market and Toyota at 16.4%.
The most popular new car registered last year was the Holden VX Commodore, with 6,185 registrations processed. The Ford Falcon was second with 4,338 registrations and the Toyota Corolla third with 3,495.
