"There is no discontent at Air New Zealand over Mr Beatson's representation of the company during the last year, which has been one of the most difficult periods of the company's history," Air New Zealand said in a tersely worded statement today.
"We have a difference of view about the future structure of the company's communications activities and the disestablishment of the currently integrated management of government, international and public affairs.
"This affects the nature of Mr Beatson's position and he has chosen not to work in the new structure in the changed role.
"Consequently, we have agreed to part company on amicable terms."
NZPA understands Mr Beatson, formerly a high profile television interviewer and editor of The Listener magazine, is yet another victim of Ansett's collapse.
Air New Zealand was a rather grander airline under former chief executive Gary Toomey's leadership and Mr Beatson was appointed vice president, Public Affairs, overseeing communications at Air New Zealand and Ansett. But in its more humble present form, his position has been disestablished.
Mr Beatson was not available for comment.
