The new business, called World Billing Services, will use technology recently purchased from Newcall Group (NZSE: NGL) to offer packet data billing and customer information management services.
Rocom issued 400,000 shares at 50 cents as payment for the Newcall system but says PricewaterhouseCoopers has valued the technology at $3 million.
Newcall's former tech boss, Grant Crawshay, will head the new business, which he says provides customers with a highly advanced billing service without the large infrastructure expense.
He says one of the key features of the new service will be allowing businesses to tailor bills according to customers needs.
"Through World Billing Services, companies can provide with ease a different billing format for each individual customer if required. This includes not only the layout and content of the bill but also the method that the bill is sent in - either electronically or by post."
The new company will also offer services such as bill monitoring and reporting.
" Customers can elect to put a 'cap' on their expenditure and be notified if they exceed this limit. Billing information can also be imported into Excel spreadsheets from the electronic bill and this will enable companies to track their expenditure in different areas," says Mr Crawshay.
Rocom says the Newcall spent four years developing the billing system, which has been operating in New Zealand for three years and is currently being used by Energy Online to bill retail power.
The company says the first customer of World Billing Services is Rocom Ltd, which will use the billing system to help manage customer demand for satellite products and subsequent airtime, which has grown since the Iridium network resumed operations earlier this year.
