Whitcoull's moves into music

The book and stationery stores has purchased Auckland music retailer Cedica, and says it will open the first Cedica "store within a store" at its Queen Street site in early April.

Whitcoull's has been facing increasing competition from Australian and American bookstore chains and Warehouse Stationery (NZSE: WHS) stores.

Spokesperson, Fran Stanley, says company's move into music was inevitable given its standing as a leading provider of entertainment.

"Music was the one area missing from our mix of books, magazines, dvds, videos, stationery, games and cards."

Cedica's one store, in Auckland's High Street, will close at the end of March and its owner, Phil Macdonald, will be responsible for establishing the new stores within Whitcoulls.
