NZ airport lounges in SkyNetGlobal Network

SkyNetGlobal says it has completed deployment of its network in 27 Qantas Airways lounges throughout Australia, and plans to connect Qantas New Zealand lounges in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch airports by the end of February, ahead of an international rollout.

From the start of February Qantas customers in Australia who subscribe to its service will have broadband wireless access to emails, office network or the internet using their own laptop or handheld computers whilst travelling.

CEO, Jonathan Soon, says the on-time and on-budget completion of its network is a significant milestone and will enable the company to meet its subscriber marketing campaign launch date of 1 February, 2001.

"When we unveil our marketing and pricing plans shortly following this announcement, I am confident that the market be excited about what we are offering."

Mr Soon says the completion of the New Zealand installation in February will bring SkyNetGlobal's total owned network locations to 40 as forecasted in its prospectus, which raised A$6.6 million in November last year. Qantas owns 5% of the company.

"New Zealand and USA are the top two outbound international destination for business travellers in Australia. The early than expected coverage of New Zealand, combined with our compelling USA coverage is expected to boost our international traffic."

Subscribers will also be able to use the service progressively in more than 100 locations in the US including American Airlines Admiral Clubs in 54 airports, and selected Sheraton, Westin, W, Four Points, Hilton and Crown Plaza hotels.

Cabletron Systems, a US$4 billion S&P 500 company listed on NYSE, is in the process of acquiring close to 10% of SkyNetGlobal for A$2 million, paying 53 cents per share.
