Joyce names highways of national significance

Transport Minister Steven Joyce today identified seven roading projects deemed highways of national significance which will get priority treatment under the government's infrastructure plans.

The seven projects are essential routes where congestion is sufficient to be an impediment to economic growth, channeling traffic into the nation's five biggest population centres.

Joyce said the government's aim is to substantially advance the roading links over the next 10 years under a $10.7 billion spending plan. The announcement comes after the decision this week to increase highway funding, scrapping regional fuel taxes, increasing the national fuel excise and trimming spending on public transport.

It doesn't specifically deal with Transmission Gully though Wellington's northern corridor through to Levin is one of the seven key routes listed below:

For State Highway 1:
1. Levin to Wellington
2. Waikato Expressway
3. Puhoi to Wellsford

For Auckland:
4. Completion of Waterview link of the Western Ring Route
5. Victoria Park

Regions:
6. Tauranga Eastern Corridor
7. Christchurch motorway projects.
