Telecom (NZSE: TEL) has edged a step closed to the much touted roll-out of its CDMA mobile service, beginning a nation-wide pilot programme.

The company says the programme, which involved some 2,000 customers, staff and dealers, is an important step to introducing the service.

Telecom's GM of mobile networks, Lorraine Witten, says a selection of customers has been asked to provide feedback in preparation for the commercial launch.

"We have identified a cross-section of customers representing four distinct groups - corporate, small business, family, and youth.

"Customers will be asked to fill in a number of online questionnaires to gauge their feedback on areas such as call quality, coverage, handsets and services."

Ms Witten says the pilot programme is going well and the network is on track for launch in the next few weeks.

"We are confident that once customers experience the excellent coverage, clarity and sophisticated functionality of the network, they will be convinced of the obvious benefits of using CDMA now and for the future."

Telecom is hoping the new, high-tech network will boost mobile revenues and give it an extra edge against major rival, Vodafone, which has continued to perform strongly in the competitive mobile market.
