A consortium led by Fletcher Building won the $406 million contract to build Auckland’s 2.2 kilometre Victoria Park Tunnel, aimed at clearing a traffic choke point on the city side of the harbour bridge.

Fletcher Construction, Beca Engineering, Higgins Contractors and Parsons Brinckerhoff, an Australian consultancy, a consortium known as V-Formation, will start construction work in November.

Victoria Park is the final element of the NZ Transport Agency’s central motorway junction improvements in Auckland. It includes a 440 metre tunnel beneath Victoria Park to carry three lanes of northbound traffic. The project is one of the Seven ‘Roads of National Significance’ identified by the NZTA.

The project will reduce “significant congestion drivers currently encounter through the Victoria Park Viaduct and St Mary's Bay,” said NZTA acting regional director for Auckland and Northland Tommy Parker.

Fletcher Building shares climbed 0.2% to $6.56 on the NZX and have gained 13% this year.
