Market Close: Market extends Tuesday's gains

The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.53% to end the day at 3,177, adding to yesterday's 1.2% gains.

The most actively traded stock on the bourse, with over 7.8 million shares changing hands was Telecom NZ, closing the day up 1% to end at $3.51. The next biggest trader was Fisher & Paykel Healthcare with over 4.7 million shares being traded. Rises outweighed falls by 73 to 41, with the star of the day being Dorchester Pacific up 10%, while the biggest loser was A2 Corporation Ltd, down 14%.

In the retail space, Pumpkin Patch rose 0.7%, The Warehouse Group gained 1.3%, Hallenstein Glasson surged 3.5% and Michael Hill soared 10.5%.
Among major losers, Goodman Fielder plunged 3.9%, Goodman Property Trust lost 1.7%, Lion Nathan fell 2.1%, Pike River Coal dropped 2.4% and SkyCity shed 1.9%.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 79 points, or 1.6%, to 5011.9, after falling to its lowest level since August 2006 in the previous session.

Tumbling oil prices fuelled a rally on Wall Street, and the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 152.25 points, or 1.36%, to 11,384.21 after a mixed opening. The Nasdaq tech-dominated composite index rallied 51.12 points, or 2.28%, to 2,294.44 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 21.39 points, or 1.71%.
