The market extended its gains for a second consecutive day and surged upwards with the NZSE50 up 2.67% (85.58 points) to end the day at 3,287.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand lowered the official cash rate (OCR) by 25 basis points to 8.0% from 8.25%, marking the first change in the OCR since July 2007.
Banks continued their positive run, with ANZ gaining 3.1% and WBC surging 2.5%.
Top stock Telecom fell 0.9%, while Contact Energy was up 4.1% and Fletcher Building soared 5.5%.
Retailers closed mixed. Pumpkin Patch gained 1.4% and The Warehouse Group advanced 1.8%, but Hallenstein Glasson dipped 2.7%.
It was a great day for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare who increased 6.5%, Rakon jumped 6.2%, Air New Zealand rose 4.1% and Fisher & Paykel Appliances advanced 5.5%.
Among other shares, Nuplex closed unchanged, but SkyCity surged 4.8% and Steel & Tube Holdings increased 3.9%.With oil extending its decline, New Zealand Oil & Gas fell 2.0%. Other decreases included Pike River Coal 1.4% and Sellerup Holdings 1.2%.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 38.8 points or 0.76% to 5144.1, while the broader All Ordinaries gained 26.8 points or 0.52%, to 5188.4.
The Dow closed up 29.88 points or 0.26% at 11,632.38, the Nasdaq closed up
21.92 points or .95% at 2,325.88 and the S&P 500 closed up 5.18 points or
0.4% at 1,282.18.
