US markets closed lower on Tuesday with the Dow leading declines as Treasury yields rose along with oil prices and investors assessed prospects for the Federal Reserve's interest rate path. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.56%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were up 0.42% and down 0.08% respectively.
Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (-0.20%), the Dax 30 (-0.34%), CAC 40 (-0.34%) and the STOXX (-0.25%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed lower. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(+0.30%), HSI (-2.06%) and the Shanghai Composite (-0.71%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 4.266%, while the 2 - year note was at 4.96%. Oil was up to $86.72 per barrel, up 1.37%. The gold price was at US$1951.30 per ounce, down 0.80%.
