Auckland Airport handled 3.8% more passengers in November than a year ago, and airports it has invested in experienced even stronger growth.

"Both Cairns Airport and Queenstown Airport saw good international passenger growth in November with Cairns experiencing 39.1% year-over-year growth," Auckland Airport said.

Mackay Airport traffic to date this financial year is up 13%.

Auckland Airport handled 554,363 passengers in November, up from 533,889 in the same month last year. It said the increase was driven by strong Asian growth. Auckland Airport's domestic passenger traffic grew 1.5%.

Separately, Infratil, the majority owner of Wellington Airport, said overall passenger growth at Wellington Airport was 2% in November. This comprised a 14% lift in regional passenger numbers, a 9% increase in international and 5% fall in passengers on main trunk routes.

Wellington Airport also said that construction work on a new aircraft hangar facility will commence in January.

The 2000sq m building will be located on the Western Apron area of the airport with a street address at 91 Tirangi Road.

The building will be used for aircraft storage and light maintenance. ExecuJet will operate the facility.

"This is a significant development for the airport, marking the beginning of the redevelopment of the western apron area and the establishment of a world-class aircraft handling facility in New Zealand's capital city," Steven Fitzgerald, chief executive of Wellington Airport, said.
