The sharemarket surged upwards today with the NZSE50 up 1.84% to end the day at 3,201 following a decline in oil prices and a positive lead from Wall St.
Today's increases saw top stock Telecom surge 2.9%, while Contact Energy and Fletcher Building each added 0.6%.
In the retail sector Hallenstein Glasson surged 7.3%, Michael Hill rose 2.6% and The Warehouse Group edged up 0.3%. Pumpkin Patch closed unchanged.
Other major gainers included Air New Zealand 7.0%, AMP 3.5%, Lion Nathan 4.2%, Port of Tauranga 3.2%, SkyCity 2.7%, Skellerup 3.7%
Banks were stronger today with ANZ up 3.6% and Westpac Banking up 6.5%.
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare also gained 4.7%, Guiness Peat Group was up 2.3%, and Infratil and PGG Wrightson increased 2.0% each.
On the flip side, Goodman Fielder fell 1.8%, ING Property Trust dipped 1.2% and New Zealand Oil & Gas dropped 1.3%.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 99.7 points to close at 5105.3, with the four big banks all closing higher.
The Dow rose 135.16, or 1.18%, to 11,602.50 and the Standard & Poor's 500
index jumped 17, or 1.35%, to 1,277.00.
