The telco and broadcaster will let viewers choose which movie goes to air at 8.30pm on Saturday by voting via text messages for their choice of film.
Voting begins on Wednesday and ends just an hour and a half before the movie is due to be screened. Voters can choose between the romantic comedy 'One Fine Day' and sci-fi flick 'The X-Files Movie: Fight the Future'.
"This promotion brings together television and mobile phones in a totally new and interactive way", says Telecom mobile manager, Mohan Jesudason.
"Texting is now a way of life for many New Zealanders and we have harnessed its power to give TV viewers the power to determine what they would like to see."
Viewers will receive confirmation of their text message vote and an update on the current voting statistics by way of a return text message.
Telecom says it has helped to develop the initiative along with The Synapse Group, a NZ mobile internet company, and TV2.
Telecom is hoping to crack Vodafone's stranglehold on the fast-growing texting market and is strongly pushing the messaging medium. Last month the two rivals finally signed an agreement which allows their different networks to send and receive text messages from each other.
