Market close: Shares close slightly higher

The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.13% to end the day at 3,357.

Top stock Telecom closed down 1.2% after going ex-dividend today. Fletcher Building finished down 3.7% and Contact Energy closed flat.

In the retail sector, Hallenstein Glasson added 1.7% and The Warehouse Group increased 0.6%, while Pumpkin Patch and Michael Hill closed unchanged.

Other major gainers included Pacific Brands 11.3%, Dorchester Pacific up 11.11%, L & M Petroleum up 5.56%, Skellerup 4.4%, Cavalier 3.2%, Pike River Coal 3.2%, Rakon 3.93% and SkyCity Entertainment 3.3%.

On the downwards decline, BLIS Technologies 18.75%, Plus SMS down 10%, Wellington Drive Technologies down 9.09%, Vector 2.2%, and Air New Zealand 2.6%.

Northland Port which owns a half stake in the port facilities at Marsden Point near Whangarei, was up 4.23% today after reporting a 7.7% gain in full-year profit after an asset sale.

Dominion Finance Holdings, whose shares have lost almost 100% of their value, increased its provision for bad debts to NZ$80 million and will write off NZ$26.6 million of goodwill after failing to win support to recapitalise the business. Their shares closed unchanged today at 2.5 cents.

After four positive days, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 17.3 points, or 0.34%, to 5118.3. The broader All Ordinaries fell 15.5 points, or 0.3%, to 5200.

The Dow closed down 1.5% at 11,544, the Nasdaq lost 1.8% to 2,367and the broader S&P 500 dropped 1.4% to finish at 1,282.
