Metlifecare has named Richard Thomson, Air New Zealand's general manager commercial, as chief financial officer starting in mid-September.

Thomson started at Air New Zealand in 2005 as general manager corporate finance and moved to roles managing long-haul and networks before taking his present job four months ago. He replaces Tristram van der Meijden, who will remain with Metlifecare until the end of September, said chief executive officer Glen Sowry.

“Richard has strong leadership skills and an outstanding track record in driving innovation in complex operational and commercially competitive environments involving significant asset investment," Sowry said. "These same dynamics which Richard has contributed to strongly at Air New Zealand, are becoming increasingly important in the retirement village sector and Richard will bring a depth of experience to the Metlifecare executive team which we look forward to sharing.”

Prior to joining Air New Zealand, Thomson was an associate director, corporate finance, at PwC.

Metlifecare shares last traded at $5.52 and have fallen 7.2 percent in the past 12 months while the S&P/NZX 50 Index gained 5.6 percent. In that same period, rival Ryman Healthcare fell about 11 percent and Summerset Group rose about 5 percent.
