Statistics New Zealand says guests spent a total of 2.9 million nights in short-term commercial accommodation in February compared with 2.7 million last year. The growth follows rises of 3% in January and 5% percent in December.
North Island guest nights rose 9% in February compared with a year ago while South Island guest nights were up 5%.
Apart from the West Coast, all regions contributed to the increase in guest nights with the Wellington region recording its highest monthly total for guest nights since the survey began in July 1996.
Backpackers/hostels had the highest growth rate, up 11% compared with a year ago to record an occupancy rate of 65% for the month.
"Hotels had the highest occupancy rate of all accommodation types at 71% followed by motels with 70%," Statistics NZ reports.
Hotels, motels and backpackers/hostels all recorded their highest occupancy rates since the survey began.
