Auckland International Airport (NZSE: AIA) is planning to triple the size of one of its international terminal retail spaces as part of a $20 million upgrade.

MD John Goulter says strong growth in tourist numbers, combined with the effects of the airlines' hubbing operations, has meant that passenger flows during peak times in particular areas of the international terminal are nearing capacity.

"In response to the effects of these combined factors, additional check-in and baggage handling facilities were completed in December last year at a cost of approximately $6 million."

"Due to the continuation of these operating peaks, additional capacity is now required to be provided on the first floor departure area."

Mr Goulter says the expansion will be built over the terminal's inner forecourt road and will increase both public space and retail area.

"The final presentation will be consistent with the existing City of Sails image and will also provide a new direct link from the first floor to the car park via an extended covered walkway and escalators."

"The increased facilities will dramatically improve passenger flows and customer service levels in this important area of the terminal."

Mr Goulter says the expansion will be ready for the peak holiday season in November and returns on the investment will be provided via increases in retail income from the expanded retail areas, together with revenue from the airport development charge received from the increased passenger flows.
