Food prices rose 2 percent in July from June, pushed up by a strong 8.9 percent increase in fruit and vegetables.
Meat, poultry and fish prices rose 3.7 percent and grocery food lifted 0.5 percent, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) said today.
The most significant individual rises included a 34 percent lift in tomato prices, lettuce up 20.7 percent, fresh chicken up 8.6 percent, broccoli up 66.6 percent, yoghurt up 14.7 percent, and capsicums up 28.6 percent.
For the year food prices rose 7.9 percent, including a 2.2 percent lift in food prices in October due to a rise in GST.
Over the year grocery food prices rose 7.2 percent, fruit and vegetables 15.9 percent, the meat, poultry and fish 6.8 percent, non-alcoholic beverages 9 percent and restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food gained 4.2 percent.
Tomatoes were up 52.2 percent in price over the year and lettuce was up 54.4 percent.
