Contact Energy Ltd said it had 460,000 electricity customers as at March 31, down from 478,500 at the same time last year.
The company had 461,500 customers at the end of February.
The numbers were in the company's monthly update for March, which also showed hydro lake storage levels in the South Island at 113% of mean, and in the North Island at 166% of mean.
High storage levels, transmission constraints and lower South Island demand caused the price received for electricity generated in the North Island to be higher than the price for electricity generated in the South Island during March.
