Former Air New Zealand boss Rob Fyfe has been named chief executive of merino wool clothing company Icebreaker, replacing Jeremy Moon, who will become executive chairman and creative director.

Fyfe has been executive chairman for nine months and steps into the more hands-on role on June 2, the company said in a statement.

Icebreaker is expecting sales to exceed $200 million in 2014, with 80 percent coming from Europe and North America, it said. The company now has 19 of its own stores, 4,000 wholesale customers and 400 employees, it said. Sales have tripled in the past six years.

“It was a big decision for me to hand over our business to another CEO, but I’ve seen Rob’s passion for what we are building at Icebreaker and I really admire his skills, especially with people," Moon said in the statement.

Interests associated with Moon own more than 70 percent of Icebreaker. other shareholders include Warehouse Group founder Stephen Tindall, Trade Me founder Sam Morgan. Rob Fyfe is listed as holding 0.5 percent, or 5,172 shares.
