Although retail sales in February, adjusted for seasonal variations, increased by 0.9% compared with January, sales since October 2000 have risen just 1%.
Statistics New Zealand says this includes a drop in sales between December and January, and compares with a relatively sharper increase of 2.1% in the previous four months, from June to October 2000.
Figures show food retailers made the most significant contribution to the overall $33 million increase in retail sales in February compared with January, followed by motor vehicle services and recreational goods.
