Karyn,
You are quite right society is totally selective in what we frown upon . We
could rationalise ourselves away from almost any activity .Mining ,in
particular, and forestry are not totally innocent . With reafforestation in
tandem to planned felling responsible operating is possible . TV coverage has
depicted irresponsible forestry in many countries including Indonesia
and the Pacific Islands..
Germaine Greer is a passionate critic of irresponsible mining in Australia
which is doing untold damage to the environment .She is highly impressive as a
spokesperson for her cause. .
I
am dead against censorship which in fanatical and/or irresponsible hands would
reduce our living to automaton status. The only censorship I would accept
is peer disapproval . People must use persuasive powers alone to modify
irrational (a subjective term ) and harmful behaviour of friends . That is
what friendship is about. Not an activity for an authoritarian
Government. Even then 90 % of so called peers don`t know what the issues
really are.
