When Macdunk admitted in this forum that he drank his whiskey with lemonade I
was shocked.
While still slightly unbalanced by this admission I poured myself a Lamerlaw
single malt.
The bonhomie caused by the ingestion of this organic solvent put me in
reflective mood. The conclusion I came to is that there are two important
factors in enjoying a drink. They are context and companionship.
Context: Imagine this; Climbing in the mountains of the South Island of New
Zealand. On the tops you come across a clear trickle of water emanating from
a peat swamp. Extracting a flask from your pack splash a dram of whiskey into
a drinking container and add some of the water comming from the peat. Now
snuggle down between some snow tussocks to shelter from the wind. Glance at
the distant horizon and watch the distant ridges of rock and ice shimmer in
the sunlight. Then sip some of the whiskey.
Companionship: From his posts it is apparent that MacDunk has lived a full and
varied life. With the sugar from the lemonade boosting his metabolism and the
whiskey loosening his tongue I am sure that MacDunk would have many a tall
tale and wisdom to impart. I imagine conversation would be very entertaining.
Thus it does not matter if someone adds lemonade to whiskey when the context
or companionship are positive.
