[sharechat] Fishing lessons from 2003
Often you can learn more from your mistakes than what you get right.
It is the one that got away that teaches you the best lesson, rather than
the one you hauled onto the riverbank.
With this in mind, and with only one more full week's trading to go until
the end of the year, I thought I would look through the sharechatters
picks for Stockguru 2003 and pick out the ten worst performing
companies. Perhaps we can all learn some 'fishing lessons' from
these selections?
1/ GDC Communications -78%: A remora riding along on a much
larger telecommunications fish. If the shark starts to shake his head,
the remora is always going to be in trouble.
2/ NGL (Newcall) -56%: A telecommunications minnow in a hostile
ocean. Nuff said.
3/ SLL (Sky Ciy Leisure) -46%: The sparkle of the sunlight on the
expanse of water delivers more show than substance. Be careful what
you see when you cast your eye in the water. Sometimes the fish
looks bigger than it really is (thinking of the dilutionary effect on SLL of
the SLL convertible notes here).
4/ BGR (Briscoe Group) -38%: A puffer fish at the start of the year,
which had slimmed down to a more normal size, and through the mesh
in the net, by year's end.
5/ MCH (Mr Chips): -27%:
6/ RHD (Richmond): -27%
(I don't follow those two closely. Can someone who knows write the
fishy story on those two please?)
7/ WHS (Warehouse) -25%: There were three waterways to fish in.
The red sea, the blue sea and the yellow sea. The yellow sea was
full of sulphur. It still stinks!
8/ RBD (Restaurant Brands) -24% : The fishing trend is improving.
December's fish is only 5% smaller than November's fish. But
November's fish was a huge 7% smaller than October's fish! A master
at telling fish stories!
9/ AIR (Air New Zealand) -19%: It started the year gliding high, but
as the year carried on the competition got stronger for the flying fish.
10/ MHI (Michael Hill International) -18%: Slower sales for silver
scales.
Anyone else got any fishing tales they would like to add?
