Just use National Bank of NZ. You can trade shares in NYSE / NASDAQ, LSE, NZX,
ASX all from the same place, settle from a bank account (including foreign
currency accounts) in real-time etc. http://shares.nationalbank.co.nz

You don't have to be a US citizen to open an account with Ameritrade. I am
a citizen / resident of Slovenia (Europe), I've never had any formal
status in relation to the USA and I've been using my Ameritrade account
regularly since its opening at the end of 2002.
