Pleasing to see the positive article about Sky Network Television (SKY) by
Roger Armstrong in todays Christchurch Press.
I have been reading the ½ year report (Dec 2002). It mentions that Sky digital
uses transponders on an Optus satelite to broadcast the signal.
My questions are;
How reliable are satellites,
Are backup satelites available,
What would be the implications of Sky Digital going dark?
A partial answer to these questions is found on in the 'Answers to important
questions' section of the Sept. 2001 capital notes prospectus. On page 35
under the paragraph heading 'Priority and Continuity of Service under the
Transponder Agreement with Optus' the following information is disclosed;
1. The design life of the satellite is until Dec. 2006 which coinsides with
the term of the lease. Sky has the right to lease space on a replacement
satellite.
2. Sky's lease is on low priority terms. If a transponder of another client on
the satelite fails Optus has the right to bump Sky off its transponder in
favour of the other client.
3. The ability of Sky to shift the service to another satellite with similar
capabilities is 'extremely limited'.
Any information which throws further light on these points would be
appreciated.
