On Wed, 15 May 2002 in response to a question by Snoopy I used an
authoritive tone to dismiss Timaru's chances in the container trade.
The headline in todays Christchurch Press 'Lyttelton loses Maersk service'
shows just how authoritative I was.
As the ancient Greeks remind us Hubris is often followed by Nemesis.

I blame the 'Cult of the Lactating Cow' for all this because of their
obsession with N Z internal, rather than global transport costs.
This is a risk for Maersk as it adds to the tyranny of time and distance for
its customers in the Lyttelton hinterland.
The rate payers of the Timaru Waimate and MacKenzie District Councils must be
hoping that the transport costing model of the 'Cult of the Lactating Cow' is
economicly sound given the 23 million dollars needed to upgrade the Port of
Timaru to handle this increased business.
Gary Moore, the Christchurch Mayor, must have known that there would shortly
be more berthage available alongside the Lyttelton Container Terminal when he
recently refused to commit Council funds to the Lyttelton Marina
