There has been recent discussion as to the health of the NZSE.
Opinions expressed, paraphrased, range between, the patient has terminal
cancer and death is inevitable, or it just has a bad dose of the flu and a
bit of tender loving care from a new chief executive will bring it back to
full health.
Whatever the diagnosis the fact that the patient is unwell is of great
concern.
A stock exchange is important for the efficient movement of investment
capital through the economy.
If the stock exchange atrophies the movement of investment capital will move
to alternatives.
The alternatives in N Z are contributory mortgages, managed? funds, overseas
markets, or residential properties.
These alternatives range from dangerous to unwise. They would not make
as great a contribution to the growth of the N Z economy as a healthy stock
exchange.
It is important that the problem is fixed
