This is a component of the " Working at the coal
face series".
WAM is at present in a
consolidation mode. It has
quietly built some useful connections with Local Bodies and joint
ventures which ought to be rewarding.
The key to rubbish collection is landfill sites.
Those who control them stand to benefit.
There will be a considerable shift of control in
2002 as well as 2003, when some landfill sites will be closed and much of the
rubbish will then be diverted to sites owned by
WAM.
There will be a countereffect in Auckland where
recycling methods apparently have reduced the rubbish going to the landfills. At
some stage , this can be rectified by charging more at the
gate.
Commentators have suggested that a proposed
landfill tax on incoming vehicles with rubbish, will benefit
WAM.
WAM is big in recycling and that
is the way to go where possible.
WAM also produces electricity from their newer
landfills and apparently, this outweighs the effect of carbon
production caused by the trucks, carrying rubbish.
WAM therefore thinks that they they could be
entitled to Carbon credits.
Altogether, a series of positives which will
benefit WAM later in 2002 and onward.
