Subject: [sharechat] Hulun
Clucks contribution to Air N Z Debacle
I agree with Ben
that Hulun Clucks contributions on the subject were unhelpful. They were on
a scale with her statement tearing up the ANZUS treaty at the time of our
friends ( if not allies) hour of greatest need.
However the greatest damage has been the perception that the government
will gallop to the rescue, thus allowing parties with an interest in the
situation to sit on their hands and do nothing, when action should have been
taken.
In my view they should have issued a statement in the beginning that the
Govt. would, make no contribution financially, not allow the limit on
foreign ownership to be changed, and finally that it would place the airline
in statutory management if the situation warranted it.
While some points in the statement would not have been welcomed by all it
would have served notice to interested parties that the Govt. would not ride
to their rescue and they had better get on and do something.
Some peoples sense of perspective seems to fly out the window when they
consider the airline business, thinking that the ordinary rules of business
do not apply to it. I recommend that those with such conceptual difficulties
think of an aeoroplane as a bus with wings.
