I was at the 1998 Wrightson AGM at Lincoln. This was before GPG
appeared on the scene. At that meeting the directors were severely
reprimanded for not having anyone on the board that had come through
the ranks of rural retailing. The entire board consisted of
Accountants Lawyers and Farmers, "johnny come latelys" who had never
run a retailing business in their lives. People trying to run the
company by numbers who had no real concept of customer relations.
Jon Palmer got up and said they were reviewing the make up of the
board to ensure they had the right balance of skills required.
Directors from GPG, although competent people in their own right were
not the kind of additional talent they needed. GPG were always a
short term shareholder so it would have been difficult to make long
term plans for the Wrightson business with them on the share register.
I don't see GPGs contribution as negative. But I don't see it as
positive either. And we all know that in business if you aren't
going forwards you are going backwards IMHO. SNOOPY
