Micheal, 

Many viruses don't they just multiply until every document 
that you have opened with Word has the virus attached, then
when you send a document to someone else, they will get it
as well.
It is best is you use a recent virus checker to check and
clean up your computer.
Assuming that you are not using a Mac, try f-prot for DOS - 
its free. Run it under dos in Windows.

As for the usefulness of attachments, well I was just
contemplating posting all my posts as MP3 files to 
save typing them in ! ;-)
